William Ferro and the Hispanic Community of New York: A Tender History

I remember when I was only four years old. My parents played records with songs by Tito Puente, Celia Cruz and other popular artists, so, salsa music filled our home everyday. We lived in a small apartment in Queens, and our neighbors were always surprised that our “Jewish” apartment constantly played music in Spanish. But that’s just how it was in my home.

The building’s superintendent was a man named Pedro. Every morning, when my mother and I left the building, Pedro would smile and greet us. I told my mom I wanted to be able to speak to Pedro in Spanish. And one day, I did. After spending an entire afternoon listening to my mom’s records, I ran downstairs with her and proudly said to Pedro: “Pedro, I can speak Spanish.” He smiled and asked, “Billy, what do you know how to say in Spanish?” I answered: “Hello, Cha Cha Cha.” My mom and Pedro burst out laughing, while I stood there beaming with pride at my accomplishment.

I don’t know if that moment was a sign that one day I would dedicate my career to representing New York’s Latino community, or if it was just a coincidence. All I know is that I was born and raised in the middle of this incredible community.

My professional career began at the Legal Aid Society, where for two years, I worked as a defense lawyer for indigent clients – people living in extreme poverty. The majority were minorities, and many of them, Latinos.

It didn’t take long for us to become great friends and join forces to support Latino immigrants in Long Island and in the city of New York. During our first two years of working together, we distributed thousands of free flu vaccines to day laborers and their families. We gave away school supplies and other essential items to the Hispanic community. And every month, dozens and dozens of Latinos came to my law firm seeking my representation. The more we helped, the more people knew my name – and the they wanted me to be their lawyer.
